Statement
"The Science (Fiction) of Roots" (Ink Paintings 2022) is a body of work which asks viewers to imagine what is happening beneath the surface of our planet. What happens to the junk we throw out? What will landfills and junkyards look like in hundreds of years? It amuses me to imagine a society of giant sentient plants taking root and growing over life as we know it.
I use sumi ink and melted wax applied with an electric tjanting, a tool borrowed from the art of batik. I work on smooth bristol paper, which allows ink to flow with a mind of its own.
Biography & Gratitude
I currently reside in Wisconsin, my home state (US). I lived and studied in Washington State from ages 18 to 25, when much of my development as an artist took place. I am deeply appreciative of Seattle artist/mentors Saeed Mahboub and Tatiana Garmendia for guiding me through the fundamentals of drawing and painting and Mike Moran, Paul Sparks, Marilyn Frasca, and Gail Tremblay at The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington, for taking time to pass on some of their wisdom about artmaking. Finally - and simply - thank you to my family.
